Get a Prenup because “Sometimes at last doesn’t happen at first.”

I am sure you have seen the wonderful State Farm commercial of the couple getting married and their kids being grossed out that they kissed. It has this great tagline: “Sometimes at last doesn’t happen at first.” If you haven’t seen it here is the link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bn7-f0800KI.  The romantic in me loves the whole idea that your true love doesn’t have to be your first love, or something mushy along those lines.

The cynic in me thought PRENUP! The stats out there for 2nd and 3rd marriages is hovering around 60% and 70% respectively. These rates are much higher than 40%ish divorce rate of 1st marriages. There are many theories out there as to why subsequent marriages fail at such high rates, the most common being that they are rebound marriages. The first marriage failed and they jump into the next one without taking a proper amount of time to recover from the first. Another popular theory is that people are on hyper alert after the last divorce so at any sign of trouble they see divorce as the first and only option. The last reason I will mention is the lack of glue and by glue I mean children. Many couples believe in staying together for the kids, with most children being born in the first marriages the subsequent marriages lack that incentive. No children in common means no reason to stay married.

Well it is exactly because of those uncommon children that I thought about a prenup after seeing this commercial. Both the bride and groom have children from some sort of previous relationship. In cases such as this a prenup is a good idea to protect the children’s inheritances. If you want your property or assets to go your children and not your potentially temporary spouse a prenup could be the way to go. Think of the children, get a prenup.

If you are thinking “to hell with the kids, I’m looking out for me.” Fine, no problem. Looking out for yourself is another good reason to consider a prenup. If you are getting married for the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th time, by this point in your life you have probably accumulated a good bit of wealth that you may want to protect. Whether you are planning to take it all with you or leave it to your parrot Frankie, a prenup can help you accomplish that.

So when your “at last” does finally come, whether 1st, 2nd, or 3rd a prenup is definitely something to consider.
